Talks and events

We come together for talks and storytelling at the yard during the season. The topics vary, but often highlight our local history. It’s a great chance to learn something new, get inspired, and meet people in a friendly setting.

The program for the 2026 season will be ready by May 1.

Previous talks:

  • Stories about the ships in the shipping company named Orion. It all began with the model built by O. B. Sørensen in 1854, later exhibited at the World’s Fair in Oslo in 1914. From there followed tales of sailing ships, steamships, and motor vessels. The company had one Orion sailing during World War I, and another during World War II.

  • The story of the company’s beginnings, with what is believed to be the first oil cargo transported across the Atlantic. The company’s first oil tanker was also the very first registered in Arendal.

  • On August 29, 2023, it was 100 years since the steamship Ora was launched from the slipway at Bratteklev – the last ship ever built at the yard. This was marked with a talk about the ship and Norwegian shipping at the time.

  • Director and author Mirko Stopar showed his film A Devil with a Harpoon, about the whaler Lars Faen, and shared more about his work on whaling history.

  • Boatbuilder John Andersen spoke about open traditional boats and the role they have played in society and at the yard.
