School classes

We offer school classes learning experiences outside the classroom. Our programs are based on real stories and authentic objects. The educational activities combine storytelling, sensory impressions, and practical tasks. Our aim is to provide new perspectives by learning about the past in a different learning environment.

Secondary schools in Arendal

The shipyard is an important part of Arendal’s maritime history. The history of the Bratteklev family reflects that of many others who engaged in shipping and shipbuilding during the age of sail. The goal is for students to gain insight into this history and build identity and understanding.

Schools can register through Arendal municipality.

High schools

For upper secondary schools, we have developed the program: The Paradox of Technology: Progress with Footprints?

Human lifestyles and resource use have consequences for how sustainable development becomes. Technological advances are highly significant and can help solve some problems, but at the same time create new ones with major consequences.

In the present, it can be difficult to foresee the consequences of a technological breakthrough. By analyzing a historical technological innovation, we can uncover its effects on the environment, economy, and social conditions. Knowledge transfer from earlier generations can better prepare us to make responsible choices, act ethically, and be environmentally conscious.

We focus on the following technological advances:

  • Steam powered sawmill

  • Harpoon cannon

The program is part of DKS (The Cultural Schoolbag), and registration is through Agder County Municipality.

Hove Outdoor School

We collaborate with the outdoor school to give pupils in the region an insight into how important maritime activity was for Southern Norway. This program is included as part of the outdoor school curriculum.
