History

The story of Ole Bertinius Sørensen from Bratteklev, who established Bratteklev during the golden age of sailing ships in the latter half of the 19th century, is placed in historical context. Like other ambitious boys, he went to sea at an early age. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a captain. When the opportunity arose, he bought an old Canadian vessel. That became the foundation of his shipping enterprise. Over the course of his career, he owned all or part of about 40 ships, 14 of which were built in Bratteklev.

Shipping is a business highly dependent on economic cycles, and O. B. Sørensen also experienced both great profits and heavy losses. He was never afraid to seize new opportunities. At the age of 67, almost without capital, he took one last gamble. He built a steamship with a wooden hull.
