Craft-built ships
In earlier times, ships were built using the clinker method. Timber exports and other international freight demanded sturdier ships with greater cargo capacity. During the 18th and 19th centuries, merchant vessels were constructed using the carvel method. This meant that the strength of the construction lay in the keel, the stems, and the frames.
The ships in Bratteklev were built according to drawings by Jens Brandi. The tools used in their construction remain, and guides will give you insight into the proud traditional craftsmanship required to build hulls strong enough to withstand the forces of the sea.
